Pastoral Visit to Sitka
March 16th - 18th 2007

St. Michael Cathedral Sitka, Alaska

Traveling to Sitka, AK for his regular Lenten visit, His Grace, Bishop NIKOLAI was able to spend three record breaking "snow days" in the historical See of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Alaska.

During his visit, His Grace reviewed the activities of the new priest-in-charge Father Elia Larson, visited with parish leadership and celebrated the Divine Services with the faithful of the cathedral community. As usual, he also visited the Russian Bishop's Chapel of the Annunciation where he served the Divine Liturgy and prayed for faithful departed servants of the Church. "Standing on the cathedra and where St. Innocent once stood, and sitting on his seat in the high place," His Grace remarked, "Is always spiritually moving."

Sitka's St. Michael Cathedral which, from the 1840's through the turn of the 20th century was the center of Eastern Orthodoxy in the New World, glistened in the sunlight with its snow-capped domes. Sitka was also the Capital of Russian America until the Alaska Purchase in 1867 which sold Alaska to the United States.

While in Sitka, His Grace also ordained the Reader Nicholas Kashevarof, of Anchorage, AK (son of Priest Andrew Kashevarof) to the sub-diaconate. Many Years to the Sub-Deacon Nicholas!

Known for its treasures of Holy Orthodoxy unrivaled in the world, Sitka, AK is one of the jewels on the crown of the American Church which is the Alaskan Mother Diocese
