The annual conference began with the celebration of the Akathist to St. Herman.  As the Diocese continues to explore its theme of “tithing,” His Grace remarked how even though we are only asked to give a tenth of our means – St. Herman gave one hundred percent of himself to God and His Church.

A view from the air of St. Seraphim Church in Dillingham, as His Grace and his entourage passed through the air on their way to the airport and back home to Anchorage
On Saturday morning, a potluck brunch was held prior to the “General Meeting” at which the theme was discussed, questions were answered and other areas of concern with the faithful were addressed by the Bishop.  Conference time always affords the clergy and faithful an opportunity to be with their Archpastor.

His Grace was able to meet for the first time the newest member of the Diocesan Family, the son of Priest Sergie and Matushka Tatiana Active.

Scenes from the Vigil on the Feast of the Leave-taking of the Dormition of the Mother of God.  Large crowds were at Vigil and anointing lasted well past the Canon.  Faithful in attendance came not only from New Stuyahok, but also from surrounding villages such as Koliganek and Ekwok, and also from the local Hub, Dillingham.

Altar boys demonstrate for Vladyka how good they are at making prostrations prior to venerating the Holy Gospel.

St. Sergius Church, in the foreground is a large container of fishing nets – reminders of the recently completed fishing season.  The Sun is beginning to set earlier in Alaska (this photo was taken close to 10:00 PM).

Protodeacon Daniel of Anchorage borrows a four-wheeler in order to drive someone home after Vigil.

His Grace preaches the homily.  Included in Bishop Nikolai's homilies are often important illustrations and explanations, one of which is the common Alaskan expression “S’praznikom”.  Here, His Grace teaches the faithful the true meaning of the word and how to use it. Also, His Grace talked about the true meaning of a “wedding garment,” mentioned in the Gospels by our Lord Jesus Christ.
