While in Naknek, His Grace, Bishop NIKOLAI was able to tour several sites around Naknek -- including the old Church of St. John the Forerunner in Naknek (the current parish of St. Ann, Mother of the Theotokos was build and consecrated in the late 1990's). He also visited the abandoned village of Severnovski (circa 1900) and St. Mary Magdelene Church, as well as the village of South Naknek, both of which have churches. South Naknek's church building is Elevation of the Holy Cross circa 1900. Interestingly, in order to reach both of these villages, His Grace and entourage had to travel by truck over the (semi) frozen Naknek River. By air, the villages are only a mile apart, but by ground over 14 miles had to be crossed. All were amazed by the great legacy of Russian Orthodox presence in Alaska.
