Interior Transformation

In preparations for the upcoming 35th Anniversary celebration of St. Herman of Alaska’s canonization, His Grace Bishop NIKOLAI and the faithful of Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Cathedral have embarked on an ambitious church renovation. This transformation will completely renew the interior of the Cathedral by the building of a new iconostas to be adorned with beautiful icons written by the accomplished Dimitry Shkolnik and the iconostas being constructed in Old Harbor by Hieromonk Iosaph. His Grace will bless the new iconostas on June 5, 2005 after celebrating the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy

In the coming weeks the wood floors will be refinished, including the original wood floor from the 1940’s that was recently revealed when the carpet was removed. The walls and ceiling will be cleaned and newly painted in preparation for frescoing that is scheduled to begin early next year. A new chandelier will also be hung over the altar in time for this summer’s annual pilgrimages.

St. Herman’s reliquary will also be properly elevated on the south side of the iconostas in the traditional reliquary position while still allowing pilgrims easy access to venerate and pray before his holy relics. We will soon offer the ability to purchase vigil candles on-line to be placed before St. Herman’s relics.
