Lenten Vespers were celebrated at. St. Nicholas in Eklutna for the 5th Sunday in Lent. St. Nicholas Church in Eklutna, Alaska, just north of Anchorage is the first place in the Anchorage area where Orthodox missionaries came - most likely reaching it from Kenai by the 1850's. Two churches, one historic, and one built in the late 1950's stand here as testaments to the long standing Orthodoxy of the local Athabascan people. Spirit Houses built around graves evoke ancient traditions baptized into Orthodox piety.
Soon, it will be the home of St. Nicholas Skete and a formal Orthodox monastic presence in the Anchorage area after the community is formally established in May of 2007 by Bishop NIKOLAI. Monastics are already making plans to move and begin life in Eklutna to the Glory of Almighty-God.
The Anchorage Deanery of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Alaska gathers here one Sunday afternoon every lent to celebrate the Penitential Vespers Service. Many faithful from far and wide have made attending these services, each week in a different parish of the deanery, a main part of their lenten observance
