St. Michael the Archangel Feastday
November 21, 2006
Cordova, Alaska

Alaska Scenery

On November 21, 2006, His Grace traveled to Cordova to celebrate the Feast Day of the parish there. This was the first visit to Cordova for His Grace. Cordova has around 1500 residents in the winter but jumps to around 4000 in the summer. St. Michael Chuch was founded in 1927 and was recently assigned a priest after many years of not having one. Priest Alexei Knagin and his wife moved to Cordova recently and have already begun working hard to build up the parish. The Church building is over 80 years old and is filled with precious icons rescued from the abandoned village of Nuciiq before the tidal wave of 1964 leveled the village.  During his homily, His Grace stressed the need to care for these sacred items and noted that at some point they will need to be cleaned and restored to avoid losing them. The parishioners had many questions for His Grace during the luncheon, during which they expressed their gratitude for their new priest.
