"Look down from heaven..."

Blessing on the Church's Patronal Feastday!
A beam from the Afognak church is carried along the beach to be transported by boat to Kodiak in May of 2005 following the proper demolition of the church. The church was built in the early 1900's under the direction of the Holy Martyr Saint Vasily. While the church structure survived, the village was permanently abandoned and relocated across the bay after the devestating tsunami of 1964. As the years went by, the ocean began to encroach and erode the shoreline thereby undermining the foundation of the church and leading to it's collapse. Today it is the village of Port Lions and the church there bears the same name, Nativity of the Holy Theotokos.

His Grace at the blessing of the newly constructed bell tower. The bells were purchased through a generous bequest by local Kodiak resident Marie Chandler and blessed in her memory.
