Several weeks ago, Archimandrite Isidore received a call from the owner of the Adak Fisheries LLC. processing plant in Adak, AK asking that he come to the small island community of less than 200 people in order to bless the plant, the boats and several homes. This became a perfect opportunity for Father Isidore to make a visit to the Orthodox Christians living in that community. Adak served as a military installation and home to thousands of people until 1994 when the island and everything on it were turned over to the Aleut Corporation. The Aleut Corporation has been working to attract development to the island and Adak Fisheries is just such a company.
Shipping out an annual 14 metric tons of fish to customers all over the world, this company is a big part of Adak life. Currently, the plant is processing cod for the Portuguese market. Adak is the Southern most city in Alaska and the Western most municipality in the United States! For more information about Adak click here to check out the Wikipedia page!
Fr. Isidore arrived on Thursday the 31st of January. After resting the evening of the 31st from the three hour 737 flight from Anchorage, he was supposed to tour a new property being given to the Diocese to use for clergy housing and a chapel on Friday. While entering the property, however, he fell through an open crawl-space door and injured his knee. The clinic in Adak ordered him off his feet for the day.
Fr. Isidore plans on making another visit to the property on Sunday.
While in Adak, Fr. Isidore has been blessing homes, visiting with village faithful and will celebrate the Divine Services for the people there.
